Known for his close-quarters racing and fearless overtakes, Kanaan’s story is one of perseverance and heart, making him a true fan favorite. Known for his quiet, intense focus, Isaac was one of the toughest competitors of his era. His ability to push both himself and his car to the limit made him a standout in NASCAR history.

With the Red Bull much closer to the previously dominant Mercedes car, Verstappen and Hamilton engaged in an arduous, season-long battle for the title. The fight came down to the final lap of the final race, with Verstappen just taking the honours ahead of the seven-time world champion for his first title since karting in 2013. His second stint in F1 wasn’t as successful as his first, yielding a single podium to add to his collection. However, his 91 wins, 155 podiums and 68 pole positions still put him high up in any statistical analysis. Often hailed as the greatest driver never to win a world championship, Stirling Moss was a racing icon in the 1950s.

Karting record

When he was good, he was great; like humbling Alberto Ascari’s Ferrari with a Gordini at Reims in 1952. But over-revving his Ferrari in ’59 was part of him too, as was subsequently punching the team manager, and over-committing himself to the south curve at Avus — the final act of his life. On top of that, Annunziata might be one of the best-kept secrets in racing right now.

  • The Finn was also expanding his repertoire to endurance racing – driving a factory Austin Healey Sprite at Le Mans and other long-distance classics in 1966.
  • Taylor would return to the series for the 2024 season once again with Velocity Racing Development.5 He would be in title contention all season with rival Liam McNeilly.
  • With 50 career wins, he was a consistent contender in his era, but he’s equally remembered for his successful transition to the broadcast booth, where his knowledge and insight helped elevate NASCAR’s television coverage.
  • With his thirst for speed still not quenched he then turned his attention to the water and later broke the water speed record in the Blue Bird K4 hydroplane which topped out at 141.74mph on Coniston Water in the Lake District.

Many regard him as a sports car specialist – and it’s hard to brook argument with a CV that includes three victories apiece at both Le Mans and Sebring. The peak of his grand prix success was clouded by tragedy, as the very race at which he claimed the F1 world title also claimed the life of team-mate and friend Wolfgang von Trips. Hill’s GP career rather petered out from there but he continued to compete successfully in sports cars and had the distinction of winning his final race, sharing the victorious Chaparral 2F with Mike Spence in the 1967 BOAC 500Kms at Brands Hatch. Drivers like Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr., who excelled in stock car racing with track records, fell short of winning championship titles throughout their careers.

Lewis Hamilton can do things with a car that only a handful of people in the sport’s history Alice Powell have ever been able to do. He is blessed with an off-the-scale talent, one that is actually underplayed by the demands of current-era F1, which places an emphasis on tyre management over race-day pace. His 1988 championship; the bitter 1989 season that ended in controversy at Suzuka; and then the reckless first corner shunt at the same circuit a year later are well-documented. He had looked to be on course for championship success in 1983, but a mistake and an engine failure handed the title to Piquet and Prost was then fired. Still many view Prost’s career through the prism of his duel with Senna.

Bobby Unser was one of the most aggressive and exciting drivers in IndyCar history, with three Indy 500 victories and two USAC/IndyCar championships to his name. Known for his fierce competitiveness and daring overtakes, Bobby could push his car to the absolute limit. “Little Al” Unser Jr. had big shoes to fill, and he did so with style, winning the Indy 500 twice and capturing two CART championships.

He remained at Lotus for his 1986 and 1987 campaigns, scoring multiple wins in each and finishing third in the latter World Drivers’ Championship. After winning 10 Grands Prix during the 2021 season—overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of the last race of the season—Verstappen won his maiden title, becoming the first World Drivers’ Champion from the Netherlands and the 34th overall. Born in Hasselt and raised in Maaseik, Verstappen is the son of Dutch former Formula One driver Jos Verstappen and Belgian former kart racer Sophie Kumpen. After a successful karting career—culminating in his record-breaking 2013 season—Verstappen graduated to junior formulae. Following several points finishes in his debut season, Verstappen retained his seat for 2016 before being promoted to parent team Red Bull after four rounds. On debut for Red Bull, aged 18, Verstappen won the Spanish Grand Prix, becoming the youngest-ever driver to win a Formula One Grand Prix.

With 33 career victories, including the 1962 Daytona 500, Roberts had a natural talent that earned him legions of fans. With 84 career wins, including three Daytona 500 victories, Allison was a force to be reckoned with. Darrell Waltrip brought personality and flair to NASCAR like few others. A three-time Cup Series champion, Waltrip’s 84 career wins and memorable on-track battles made him a fan favorite.
